The Berkeley County Development Authority (BCDA) offers its sincere condolences to Tom Johnson, friends, and family of the late Mayor Harriet Johnson, whose recent passing was confirmed to the public on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at the Martinsburg City Council Meeting.
On behalf the board and staff of the Development Authority, President Helen Harris offers a statement:
“Mayor Harriet Johnson was appointed by the Berkeley County Council as a member of the Board of Directors for the Development Authority January 2021. When we received the word of Mayor Johnson’s devastating passing, we are reminded of the barrier she broke. First woman Mayor of Martinsburg in its more than 200 years will truly be missed. Mayor Johnson not only promoted the City of Martinsburg but also businesses, agencies, organizations, and its people. She always had a smile and her phone to take a picture. It would be rare to attend a function and not see and feel her presence and support. Without a doubt she loved Martinsburg and was working hard to continue to make it a place to be proud. On behalf of the Berkeley County Development Authority, we extend our deepest sympathies to her husband Tom, family, and friends”
