You may have seen that there have been some changes at the Berkeley County Development Authority. First, let me introduce myself. I, Jennifer Smith, have been the Executive Director since October 31, 2022, and have been with the BCDA since July 2019. One of my professional goals for this coming year is to continue my training to become a Certified Economic Developer. I look forward to serving our growing community and will be sharing information and updates monthly to provide more transparency with the community.
December has been a busy month. Commercial Metals Company (CMC) announced that it has selected the former DuPont Site in Berkeley County, WV for its fourth micro mill site. CMC manufactures, recycles, and fabricates steel and metal products using 100% recycled scrap that will be used to build highways, bridges, and industrial structures. This environmentally friendly steelmaking plant is scheduled to begin operations in late 2025, with a total investment of approximately $450 million and is anticipated to employ 230 people.
In addition, the Berkeley County Development Authority is heavily invested in our community, sponsoring many events and activities in Berkeley County. Most recently, the BCDA donated $75,000 to the American Legion-Post 14 Baseball to upgrade the baseball field at PO Faulkner Park in an effort to help put the team in a position to host tournaments in Berkeley County.
